Hearing God
![]()
I have heard people say that they just don't hear from God the way they used to. I mean, God is still speaking, but it seemed like when they first got saved, He almost spoke in an audible voice. It was so clear that there was no mistaking what He said. Then over time, the voice changed. They still hear what He is saying but somehow it is different. God doesn't seem to talk as loud or as plain. Hallelujah! We are growing up!
Elijah was a mature man of God. He had heard God on many occasions and been obedient to demonstrate His will. He had grown in his calling as a prophet of the Most High God and everyone knew it. You would think that God spoke to him clearer and louder than all the rest of us but look at this verse.
1Kings19:11 And he said, Go forth, and stand upon the mount before the LORD. And, behold, the LORD passed by, and a great and strong wind rent the mountains, and brake in pieces the rocks before the LORD; but the LORD was not in the wind: and after the wind an earthquake; but the LORD was not in the earthquake:
12 And after the earthquake a fire; but the LORD was not in the fire: and after the fire a still small voice.
13 And it was so, when Elijah heard it that he wrapped his face in his mantle, and went out, and stood in the entering in of the cave. And, behold, there came a voice unto him, and said, What doest thou here, Elijah?God chose to speak to His mature servant in a "still small voice". You see the more mature we become spiritually, the more in tune our spiritual senses are with God. Thus, as our spirit man learns to hear the voice of God, God speaks quieter. He wants to continually draw us toward Him. He wants us to keep listening for His voice and following Him. And even though you probably don't find yourself on the level of Elijah (I don't know anyone like him. Do you?) the spiritual principles still apply.
