Holiness

The word "holy" occurs many times in the Bible. The instruments in the Temple were holy. We serve a holy God. Incredibly, I haven't been able to find a scripture that says exactly what holiness is. Oh I know a dictionary will tell you it means something set apart to worship God or it's one of the attributes of God, but what does that mean?

In the Old Testament the Ark of God was so holy that Uzzah died when he touched it. (2 Samuel 6)That always seemed a little unfair because he was trying to keep it from falling. Isn't He a good and loving God? God wouldn't really kill someone with such good intentions would He? Even though He is good and loving, He is also Holy and we had better find out what that means. After this incident, David went back and found out how God had told them to transport the Ark and when He did it God's way, it brought blessings to them.

In 1 Samuel 5 & 6 the Bible tells what happened to the Philistines when they captured the Ark and also what happened when it was returned home and some of the men of Beth Shemesh looked into it. (If you have never read it, it is worth looking at.)

The point is, God is serious about His Holiness and we are going to have to learn about it if we are going to fellowship with Him because holiness is not something God has, it's something that He is. He showed it to me like a hot pot of soup. He said that even though the soup is for you, you can't just pick up the pot and drink from it because you would get scalded. You have to ladle the soup into a bowl and use a spoon to cool it enough to be able to eat it. As long as you approach the soup the right way, it nourishes you.

God sent His Son, Jesus, to earth so that we could once more be in fellowship with Him. Current thinking seems to be that as long as you have been "Born Again" you have access with the Father and everything is fine. That may "get you in the door" but it is only the starting line.  Paul likened it to a race.  It takes a daily walk with Him, allowing Him to clean us up and show us what we need to do to grow into the maturity God is calling us to.

Psalm 24:3 Who shall ascend into the hill of the LORD? or who shall stand in his holy place? 4 He that hath clean hands, and a pure heart; who hath not lifted up his soul unto vanity, nor sworn deceitfully. 5 He shall receive the blessing from the LORD, and righteousness from the God of his salvation.

Let's not take God for granted. He doesn't do things our way. He is a righteous and holy God. It's time we started giving Him the respect He deserves.
