Obedience

1 Samuel 15:22 And Samuel said, Hath the LORD as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the LORD? Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to hearken than the fat of rams.

Two of the most important questions we face as Christians are: what has God called you to do and are you doing it?  It doesn't matter if the task He has given you is a large or small one.  Both are equally important in His sight.  Even though the Bible tells us it is unwise, being human, we tend to compare what we are doing with that of others.  "I just watch the babies but he's the pastor... I'm just an usher; he's the teacher....I have a local ministry; his is world-wide."  It doesn't matter what the job is, the questions remain.  Are you supposed to do it and are you doing the best you can at it?

Scripture doesn't tell us we are to develop a ministry and hope it is what God wants.  The kingdom of this world uses logic to develop it's leaders.   "Let's see what you are good at and interested in and then we will find a place for you."  Conversly, God has given us the principle of servanthood.   As you faithfully serve someone else, character is developed in you.   You learn dilligence, loyalty, constancy and faithfulness.  These are all old-fashioned sounding terms but they are hallmarks of the Kingdom of God.  At the same time He develops character, God slowly reveals the giftings and talents He has planted within you.  Finally He places you in the place He reserved for you and you become a fully contributing member in the Kingdom of God.  Fulfillment is knowing you are doing what He has created and prepared you to do and it all starts with simple obedience.
